Interactive ONS COVID data
How a new dashboard was created
The interactive version is via the link below.
It contains the February 2023, UK Office of National Statistics (ONS) data on mortality and vaccination status.
This was published in the form of an Excel spreadsheet.
Inside the spread sheet there are 8 individual sheets. Five of those eight are data on how many people died of three broad categories, seven age groups, two sexes, and some 8 different vaccination states.
The data on deaths includes how may per month, an estimate of the total person-years lost, and an estimate of the death rate per 100,000 persons with an indication of the confidence band around those estimates.
In total there are about 30,000 rows of data.
The information is impossible to gauge quickly because all the ages and other characteristics are spread over thousands of rows.
What was needed was to hold that in a database that can be searched.
That is the project:
To make the ONS data easily searched and displayed.
The initial test of this new interactive service was made available to an invited group of experts and now you have the opportunity to try it out.
From the home page, click the Table 2 (By Age) link to be able to investigate that table from the ONS.
On the search page you will see a lot of checkboxes with which you can choose what groups, causes or dates you want to see.
Below that is an example table of data for a specific age group and vaccination status. The input form comes prepared with an example of choices & if you click the
Get Data
button and wait, you will see that data displayed as various graphs and as a table.
If you change the selection, the graphs will change as will the table.
If you want to download the table, that is available as an Excel file.
If you try it out you can leave a comment. Bug reports are encouraged.
